Overview

The Cloud Market and UXPaaS

Cloud services have developed at an incredibly fast pace over the last several years and an obvious segmentation of the market has occurred. Three types of services have emerged: Software-a-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-a-a-Service (IaaS). While the first two seem to be stabilizing, the PaaS market is still maturing.

Since PaaS describes the entire middleware stack between the hardware (IaaS) and the end-user (SaaS), features and services of PaaS offerings can vary widely. However, as Gartner recently stated, they all serve a same purpose:

"PaaS is used to enable a cloud-based business application, itself in turn offered as a service (and often referred to as SaaS)." (Gartner, Platform as a Service: Definition, Taxonomy and Vendor Landscape, 9 May 2011)

Among this fragmented PaaS market, two types of offerings stand out: aPaaS and UXPaaS.

  • Application PaaS (APaaS) provides the core technology (such as multi-tenancy or elasticity) for developing and deploying cloud applications.
  • User eXperience PaaS (UXPaaS) provides the UI and interaction capabilities to integrate apps in the cloud with a collection of services (such as portal, content, collaboration, social, mobile, etc).

With eXo Platform, eXo aims to be a leader in the UXPaaS market.
