{"id":15382,"date":"2018-03-09T06:53:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T14:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/blog\/?p=15382"},"modified":"2018-03-09T06:53:33","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T14:53:33","slug":"blackberry-is-suing-facebook-for-stealing-its-features-exo-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/blog\/blackberry-is-suing-facebook-for-stealing-its-features-exo-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"Cartoon of the Week: BlackBerry is suing Facebook for stealing its features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BlackBerry<\/strong> Limited, the Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/digital-collaboration-software\/\">enterprise software company<\/a>, filed a lawsuit against <strong>Facebook<\/strong> claiming that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/enterprise-social-network\/\">social network<\/a> and its subsidiaries (WhatsApp and Instagram) infringed on <strong>BlackBerry\u2019s messaging app<\/strong> patents.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It seems like the old king of <strong>mobile messaging<\/strong> is coming after the new king.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendants created <strong>mobile messaging applications<\/strong> that co-opt <strong>BlackBerry<\/strong>\u2019s innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features that made <strong>BlackBerry<\/strong>\u2019s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place,\u201d <strong>BlackBerry<\/strong> said in its complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Those at<strong> Facebook<\/strong> have always thought that for an industry to evolve, the main players need to replicate what works. After all, <strong>Facebook<\/strong> wasn\u2019t always the king of social media; it became a pioneer after <strong>MySpace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook<\/strong> responded to the suit in a statement by Deputy General Counsel Paul Grewal: \u00a0\u201c<strong>Blackberry<\/strong>\u2019s suit sadly reflects the current state of its <strong>messaging business<\/strong>. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, <strong>Blackberry<\/strong> is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook<\/strong> may have a point. Innovation caused <strong>BlackBerry\u2019s<\/strong> huge losses.
