A sidebar that adapts to user needs

The sidebar acts as the dashboard of your digital workplace. It allows you to easily navigate between different sites, pages, and spaces. With the new eXo 7.0 release, this menu becomes more flexible and offers user-level customization options.

All that’s left is to try out the different settings to find the ones that suit you best.

3 ways to display the sidebar

Do you prefer a text-based interface or more visual navigation experience? Easily switch between different display modes:

  • Icon view: for a compact interface and quick access.
  • Locked view: to view labels, navigate more easily, and create an app-like experience.
  • Closed Sidebar: to read a document, note, or page in full screen, or to create a website-like appearance.

By default, a single click is all it takes to switch display modes, depending on your preferences or work context—whether in the office, working remotely, out in the field, or on a small screen.

Choose your home page

Checking your personal dashboard or activity feed several times a day? Choose them as your home page.

By default in eXo Platform version 7.0, you can choose your home page. Easily click on the platform logo, wherever you are, to go to your home page. This option saves you time on a daily basis, and gives you an interface that truly reflects your priorities.

Advanced sidebar customization for administrators

While users can adapt the sidebar display to suit their needs, administrators can go much further in customizing the bar via the administration center.

Indeed, version 7.0 provides highly advanced customization capabilities, enabling administrators to create a coherent navigation adapted to their business, their teams and their corporate culture.

Set up the sidebar from the administration center

There’s no need for special development: customizing the sidebar can be done via an easy and intuitive interface, accessible from the administration center.

You can :

  • Allow users to choose their own home page
  • Choose the default display mode for the sidebar: Locked, closed, icon view
  • Add internal sites & pages or workspaces
  • Link external pages: business tools, third-party applications, websites, etc.
  • Add categories to organize your workspaces (by theme, department, geographical area, etc.) and select options such as the number of items to be displayed per category, sorting mode, mobile display, etc.
  • Add separators and reorganize the order of items to better guide users.

Each item can be configured with a title, icon, URL and access permissions.

A preview of the sidebar is provided for simplicity.

The result is a customized bar that reflects your priorities and adapts perfectly to the needs of your teams.

Adapt the sidebar to your different contexts and audiences

The advanced options provided in the new version of eXo allow you to go even further in customization by creating different sidebars for different user profiles. To do this, rest on user groups and permissions.

Each internal site, each space, each category can be visible only to a specific group. All you have to do is define the access rules from the administration center, in the “Development” menu, then by going to “Sites” or “Category”.

You can create :

  • A menu for HR, with direct access to the HR portal, internal news and processes.
  • Another for project teams, with links to their dedicated spaces
  • A third for the management team, with dashboards and management tools…

These advanced options give you full control over content, structure and audience, and enable you to provide clearer, more targeted bars and more in line with the needs of each employee.

Tools accessible at any time in the top menu

Unified search, chat, notifications, bookmarks, application center… These useful everyday tools can be customized in eXo 7.0 to suit your needs, whether you’re using a desktop or a smartphone.

Customize the topbar

As an administrator, you can now choose which tools you want to display in the topbar for users.

You can :

  • Enable or hide chat
  • Enable favorites, notifications, unified search, application center
  • Reorganize icons according to your priorities
  • Adjust visibility according to use context: desktop or mobile

What’s more, as an administrator, you can set the platform’s identity, i.e. choose a logo and a name. For mobile use, you can choose to display the logo or not.

So, on mobile, the interface is optimized to keep only the essentials. All items automatically adapt to the size of the screen, providing smooth navigation.

Create customized navigation bars

With eXo Platform 7.0, navigation menu customization becomes a true driver of efficiency. Whether you’re a user or an administrator, you can now tailor your work environment to your specific needs. Navigation, quick access, mobile display—everything is now smoother, more intuitive, and more personalized.
