We, at eXo, are passionate about tech and Java!
We wanted to have an event where we could share our interests with others but, in Hanoi, where we do most of our R&D, we noticed the lack of such a technical group.
Some weeks ago, we decided to create a community around Java.
After some mails and tweets, we discovered that many geeks in Hanoi had the same wish; our group now has more than 120 members and 65 of them came to the first event, hosted in the eXo office.
We had two great talks about Java 8 features (“Lambda” by Benoit de Chateauvieux and “Streams” by Vu Dang Ngoc).
The debate and the questions were exciting: How can functional programing change the way we code? What are the benefits? How functional is Java 8? Are Java parallel streams always a good way to improve performance? (FYI, the response was “No!”)
We then had a great time networking around some beers and Vietnamese finger food provided by eXo. Amazing contacts!
We are now a community and we have a big list of ideas for future meetings!
Thanks to everyone and long live the Hanoi JUG!
