Cartoon of the Week: Will Musk’s satellites change our view of the night sky?

eXo Platform Blog

Elon Musk, SpaceX’s owner and CEO, is launching an array of satellites and it’s worrying astronomers as the orbiting “Starlink” devices are moving like a train above cities around the world and may wreck our view of the cosmos.

The company’s aim is to “connect end users with low-latency, high-bandwidth broadband services by providing continual coverage around the world using a network of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit.”

But that’s not what astronomer Ronald Drimmel said in a new report by Forbes. “Starlink…”, he says, “… would ruin the sky for everyone on the planet.” Other astronomers are worried about the Starlink satellites interfering with gathering images.

But Musk confirmed that SpaceX would “make sure Starlink has no material effect on discoveries in astronomy” and has even sent a note to his team to ask about reducing the reflectivity.

True to form, Elon Musk continues to create buzz and make a name for himself. We can’t go a month without hearing about something controversial he has done or said.
