Cartoon of the Week: Musk and Zuckerberg clash over artificial intelligence
Two of tech’s biggest juggernauts are having differing views on whether artificial intelligence (AI) could help or hinder humanity.
I’m talking about Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, who are publicly fighting over the future of AI.
While Musk is criticising Facebook co-founder Zuckerberg for having a ‘limited’ understanding of the matter, Zuckerberg still can’t figure out why Musk is being so negative and is mocking his behaviour.
Musk isn’t against AI. On the contrary, he even suggested earlier this year that we should connect our brains to AI so we can always control it and not become inferior to it. His concern is that these super-smart machines may one day pose a threat to humankind. He said AI is ‘the greatest risk we face as a civilization’ and even called for swift government regulation.
Musk isn’t the only one concerned about this. Other scientists, such as Stephen Hawking, have warned that AI could one day be able to redesign itself.
Zuckerberg, on the other hand, is not convinced by the Tesla CEO’s remarks and is taking a starkly contrarian position.
‘I have pretty strong opinions on this. I am optimistic,’ Zuckerberg said, as reported by CNBC. ‘I think you can build things and the world gets better. But with AI especially, I am really optimistic.’
He continued: ‘I think people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios – I just, I don’t understand it. It’s really negative and in some ways I actually think it’s pretty irresponsible.’
It’s always a pleasure to see two giants fighting over our future. And you? Which team are you? Musk or Zuckerberg?
