Cartoon of the Week: Children to learn some ethical hacking skills at DEF CON

In order to bolster its cyber defenses, the US Army is getting the next generation ready for hacking by teaching kids how to do so in one of the largest hacking conferences in the world, DEF CON.

Youngsters are participating in the r00tz Asylum hacking event and are learning some ethical hacking skills, or what we call “white hat”.

That means that it’s ok to hack as long as it’s ethical. One day it will be ok to rob as long as you hurt no one or as long as you don’t steal a huge amount of money!

Daniel Lim, first lieutenant of the US Army Cyber Command, said “We’ll be teaching basic exploitation using open source tools and basic command line tools. This is designed for complete beginners.”

One of these kids might someday hack the government and that’s ok. In fact, deliberately inviting hacking to strengthen information security is a well-known practice. Last year, the US military forces launched the hack the Pentagon operation to encourage hackers to attempt to access important digital data belonging to US military forces.

Many seem to believe that the most important thing the security community can do to keep the future safe is teaching kids how to hack!
