Cartoon of the Week: iPhone X’s Challenge with Facial ID

Facial recognition is here, and if the idea of unlocking your phone with your face is creepy, you better start getting used to it.

Apple has the internet talking this week with its new iPhone X, which was first introduced during the company’s keynote. The new IPhone X can be unlocked using your facial ID. Apple is using this system to enhance security. Unfortunately, the system was so secure that it didn’t even recognise Craig Federighi, the company’s vice-president, while he was demonstrating this new feature on stage. I’ll let you imagine people’s reactions and how the internet lit up, with everyone proclaiming that the demonstration was a complete fail!

Apple, on the other hand, didn’t see it that way. The company said the feature didn’t work because many people handled that iPhone X while setting up the stage for the event, which caused the facial recognition sID to be disabled.

Apple’s statement is as follows: “People were handling the device for stage demo ahead of time, and didn’t realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face. After failing a number of times, because they weren’t Craig, the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode. Face ID worked as it was designed to.”
