Cartoon of the week: Amazon Snowmobile Truck drives literally your data to the cloud

This Wednesday during the cloud computing conference in Las Vegas, Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy had someone drive a truck, a Snowmobile, on stage to the delight of a laughing and cheering audience, with everyone believing that it was some kind of  joke.

But it wasn’t; actually, what Amazon was doing was demonstrating a solution to a tricky problem: how do you migrate all of the data stored in a company’s massive data centre to Amazon’s cloud? By filling Snowmobiles full of Amazon’s Snowballs – a physical storage device that can help move 50 TB of data out of a data centre to Amazon’s cloud.

Using conventional means of transferring that data, “it will take you 26 years to move an exabyte to the cloud”, Jassy said.

Enter the Snowmobile. “With 10 Snowmobiles, it takes only six months” to move that data to the cloud, Jassy said.

Amazon will now drive the Snowmobiles to the data centre, hook up to the data centre and transfer the data, and then drive back home, I mean to Amazon. Yes it’s as simple as that! Well hypothetically.

After AmazonFresh, now it’s the turn of the Snowmobile. This makes one wonder if Amazon had a donation of trucks earlier this year and has consequently decided to use them wisely.
