Cartoon of the Week - Product Hunt Yelpifies the Software Community

Last week, Product Hunt, an online community where users submit, discover, discuss and vote on new tech products, won the Crunchy Best New Startup Award.
We’ve seen many similar companies spring up over the past few years – Capterra, G2 Crowd, and GetApp among them – signifying a trend in which the voice of the user is just as important, or even more so, than those of the analysts.

Much in the same way that Yelp started to compete with Guide Michelin, these new software directories are competing with analyst firms like Gartner. This shift helps level the playing field for startups, many of which were otherwise unable to compete with their larger and richer competitors.
This democratization of software reviews provides a more authentic overview of each product featured, allowing users to speak to – or listen to – their peers. By focusing on community dialogue, rather than an analyst monologue, users have access to richer, more authentic information.
